They say that the 2 most stressful things you will do in life is get married and build a house. I am not going to enter the dangerous territory and comment on marriage but I am certainly in a position to give some very positive feed back on my first building experience.

My wife and I had purchased a block with absolutely no infrastructure but plenty of ideas. We had over a period of time compiled lots of photos to show what we liked but had no idea of how to bring the project to fruition.

After meeting with numerous builders all of whom offered the world but most of whom we had very little confidence in and nor did we feel that they listened to our request and truly understood what it was we actually want I felt that in many instances the push was on to merely sign up another contract.

This is where Mick Fabar and the green homes team come in. We met with Mick and the team and very quickly felt comfortable that they understood they are building our home and would build it they way we wanted it. We were able to set some basic parameters of costs and the basic style of living we wanted in the home within the first meeting. Mick was very proactive and had very quickly provided with some different options in the way concept plans for us to consider.
The whole process was efficient and pain free despite us having some individual requests from his team, a couple of which they had not handled before.

At the risk of oversimplifying the task that was performed by Mick and his team I will keep this short.
The professionalism shown throughout was exemplary, Mick was available to me at all times to discuss progress. Any little technicalities that arose got handled without fuss. The tradies on the job were also very professional and accommodating to what at times must have been annoying enquiries.

The end result was exactly what we wanted, we are ecstatic with both the process and the result.
It is without hesitation that I would recommend Mick and the team. By choosing Green Homes one of lifes 2 most stressful experiences will be a pleasure, I wish you good luck with the other.

Building our first solar passive home taught us the importance of gathering accurate information. The American book we used in that home was still of great value. New books are available and the Internet is an excellent resource which we didn’t have then. We attended a really useful weekend workshop on solar passive design. We even contacted an architect from England we saw on the TV show “Grand Designs” to find out about the Heat Recovery Ventilation System. We joined Bathurst Community Climate Action Network (BCCAN) which has been a great source of support and information.

If you want a special home to really suit your lifestyle, you must be patient, very specific and work with others. If there are things you are not specific about, the draftsperson will make those decisions for you. Being patient in the planning will save you costly mistakes and delays. When the builder starts the building his job will be so much easier if the plans are very clear.

We had ideas from homes we had lived in before and room sizes that worked. We decided how we wanted to use each room, the storage needed, which side of the house each room should be placed to take advantage of the sun or shade, even furniture and door placements so that the house would work best for us. The design of your home is a totally personal thing, and these are all decisions you will need to make for yourself.

Finding a designer and a builder who really understands how to build a healthy, energy-efficient home was the next hurdle. A number of builders were not interested in solar passive design at all; others claimed they knew about solar passive building, but when we asked a few questions it was clear they did not understand. We worked with designers to try and get a design that achieved all the things we wanted, but each time we were disappointed.
Then a year ago we were meeting with friends at the Rahamim Ecological Learning Center who are community leaders in environmental issues and asked if anyone knew a builder who really understood how to build the type of home we wanted. Everyone agreed that we should speak to Mick Fabar of Green Homes Australia.

After we had an interview with Mick, it was a relief to find a builder who knew about solar passive building. He was very interested in working with us to achieve the type of home we wanted and was interested in the solar technology we wanted to use. It is so much easier working with people who are interested in the same outcome.

People ask me why go for a "green" home and why "Fabar Constructions". My answer to them is this.

I believe we all need to be doing more in helping to reduce our energy consumption in any way that we can. One of the ways we can do that is to be proactive in and around our homes by incorporating as many of the proven energy saving strategies as we can. In particular, in building a new place we can, for not a lot of extra cost, make a big difference not only to our energy usage but also to our ongoing energy costs.

When we first started to develop our plans for our new home we found a very distinct lack of knowledge, enthusiasm and interest in energy efficiency in general. This was from virtually all sections of the building industry from designers, builders and tradespeople through to the council officers.

Hence when we found Mick Fabar Constructions, and found them to be so interested in our plans and what we were looking to achieve we were very pleased indeed. All through the planning stage we found them to be very helpful and keen to consider our different ideas. Some of these proved to be not goers but many were able to be incorporated in the final plans.

All through the building phase, we found both the management team as well as the tradespeople to be tuned together with us to bring about the excellent result that we finally achieved. Thank you very much Mick and all your team

When we first approached Mick Fabar Constructions to do an extension and renovation of our home we were impressed with the very professional manner in which the stages of planning and approval, quotation and contract were completed.

The demolition phase went smoothly with preservation and cleaning of bricks for later use, safe removal of fibro cladding etc.. As building progressed we were able to live with reasonable comfort in a construction site. The tradesmen were at all times friendly and helpful and mindful of our needs in the situation.

We have been extremely impressed with the standard of workmanship achieved by Fabar Construction workers and the contract tradesmen employed by Mick. His personal supervision was always evident and we appreciated his dedication to achieving the best possible result, in a completely seamless fashion, to maintain a matching finish to the house. It is impossible to tell the old from the new, both inside and out.

Mick’s ability to bring the project to completion on quoted price was much appreciated also. It indicated his total understanding of the problems and difficulties which would be encountered before the work commenced.

We have no hesitation in recommending Mick Fabar Constructions.
